The job

Mid-terrace roofs are rarely simple. On this Huntingdon property the roof turns a corner and meets the neighbouring houses on both sides, so the new roof had to tie in cleanly with roofs we were not replacing.

We fitted a full alternative slate roofing system with cross-battening, also called double battening. A second layer of battens runs across the first, which gives every slate a correct fixing and leaves a ventilated space behind it.

The trickiest detail was where the roof meets the neighbour. The roof heights were different, so a standard bonding gutter would not have worked. Instead our team formed a bespoke lead detail to weather the junction properly. It is the kind of detail that decides whether a terrace roof stays dry.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Huntingdon and St Ives?

Yes. Huntingdon, St Ives and the surrounding villages are all inside the area we cover. We carry out free surveys and fixed written quotes, call 01733 964623.

Can you re-roof a mid-terrace house without touching next door?

Yes. We replace your roof and tie it into the neighbouring roofs at the party wall. Where the roofs line up, a bonding gutter usually does the job; where the heights differ, as they did here, we form a lead detail to weather the junction.

What is cross-battening?

A second layer of battens fixed across the first. It gives each slate a correct fixing point and creates a ventilated gap behind the slates, which helps the roof dry out and last.

Is the work checked by anyone independent?

Yes. Every full re-roof we carry out is third-party checked by Building Control, so you get independent proof the job was done properly, on top of our 20-year written guarantee.
