The difference between a resin drive that lasts twenty years and one that cracks in two is entirely in the base. We dig out, build up and compact a proper sub-base, lay a suitable binder course, and only then apply the resin-bound stone, UV-stable resin, correctly mixed, hand-trowelled to a flat, even finish.

Resin bound driveways, and how they differ from resin bonded
A resin bound driveway is clean, dried natural aggregate mixed with a clear UV-stable resin and trowelled by hand onto a firm base. Each stone is coated and locked to the stones around it, but the gaps between them stay open, so rain passes through the surface into the ground below instead of running off onto the road. The finish is smooth and level, with no loose gravel to scatter and no joints for weeds to root in. Resin bonded is a different product: resin is spread over the base and loose stone is scattered onto it, which gives a rougher, gravel-like texture, seals the surface so water cannot drain through, and sheds stone as it wears. Check which of the two a quote names. We lay resin bound with UV-stable resin only, because cheap non-UV resin turns yellow within a couple of years.
How a resin bound driveway is installed
Step one is the survey. We check the levels, the drainage, the height of your damp-proof course and the state of the existing surface, and send you photographs with the fixed quote. Step two is the base. On a full dig-out the old drive is excavated and taken away, then a sub-base is built up and compacted and a binder course laid on top; on an overlay, sound tarmac or concrete is cleaned and kept. Step three is the edging, set in block, granite or steel to hold the resin at the perimeter. Step four is the surfacing: aggregate and resin are mixed in measured batches and hand-trowelled to an even depth before each batch starts to cure. Step five is the hand-over, with the site cleaned down and the drive ready for feet the next day.
Colours, aggregates, care and lifespan
You choose from dozens of natural aggregate blends, from pale buffs and golds to silver greys and near-black, and the colour you pick is the colour you keep, because UV-stable resin does not discolour in sunlight. A border in a contrasting blend or a block edge frames the drive and marks the line between drive and path. Looking after it takes little time: sweep it, rinse it with a hose or a pressure washer on a low setting, and wipe up oil spills promptly so they do not sit on the surface. Leaves and moss come off with a stiff brush. In England, a new hard surface over five square metres in a front garden needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a permeable area within your boundary. Resin bound is permeable and meets SuDS principles, so most homes avoid the application. Is resin bound permeable?
Yes, genuine resin bound (stone mixed with resin, trowelled flat) lets water drain through, which usually removes the need for planning permission. Beware cheap 'resin bonded' scatter systems, which are not permeable and shed loose stone.

Avoid harsh solvents, which can soften the resin. Because the surface has no joints, weeds have nowhere to root, so there is no weeding to do.
