Resin Patio Cost in 2026: UK Prices per m²

A resin bound patio costs £70 to £100 per m² over a sound base, or £100 to £140 per m² with a full dig-out, so a 20m² patio comes in at £1,400 to £2,800.

A resin bound patio costs £70 to £100 per m² laid over sound concrete or tarmac, or £100 to £140 per m² with a full dig-out and new sub-base, so a typical 20m² patio costs £1,400 to £2,800. The base under the stone decides which band you pay, and smaller patios sit at the top of each band.

These are 2026 UK guide prices drawn from Checkatrade, MyJobQuote, MyBuilder and Oltco, not a price list of ours. Your real figure depends on what sits under the patio now, the edging you pick and how easy the garden is to reach. Arkenstone surveys free of charge and gives you a fixed written quote within 48 hours, valid for 30 days, with the base work, edging and waste removal itemised so you can compare quotes line by line.

Resin patio cost by size

Patio sizeOverlay on a sound baseFull dig-out and new sub-base
Small, around 10m² (bistro or seating area)£700-£1,000£1,000-£1,400
Medium, around 20m² (family patio)£1,400-£2,000£2,000-£2,800
Large, around 40m² (patio and path)£2,800-£4,000£4,000-£5,600

Guide prices including UV-stable resin, aggregate, edging and waste removal. The crew, mixer, priming and minimum resin batch cost the same on a 10m² job as on a 40m² one, so small patios land at the top of each range and larger ones nearer the bottom.

Resin patio prices per m²

SpecificationGuide price per m²
Resin bound overlay on sound concrete or tarmac£70-£100
Full dig-out, new sub-base and resin bound surface£100-£140
Ground preparation on its ownAround £40
Resin bonded scatter coat instead of resin bound£15-£25 less than resin bound
UV-stable resin, material only£5.30-£5.90 per kg
Non-UV resin, material only£4.20-£5.20 per kg

Our resin driveway cost guide puts driveways at £60 to £85 per m² overlaid and £85 to £130 dug out. A patio base is shallower because it carries feet and garden furniture, not cars, but a patio is smaller, so the same fixed costs are spread over fewer square metres. That is why patio rates per m² land level with driveway rates or slightly above them.

Resin bound vs resin bonded patios

The two names sound alike and the finish is completely different. Resin bound stone is mixed with resin before it goes down, then trowelled flat at around 15mm on a patio. The result is smooth, firm underfoot and permeable, so rain drains straight through it. Resin bonded is a coat of resin rolled onto the base with loose stone scattered on top. It feels like gravel, it is not permeable, and loose stones shed onto the lawn and into the house over time.

MyBuilder puts resin bonded at £15 to £25 per m² less than resin bound. On a 20m² patio that saves £300 to £500, and you give up drainage and a surface you can walk on barefoot to get it. Arkenstone lays resin bound for patios, paths, step surrounds and pool areas, because a patio is somewhere you sit, walk and put furniture.

Resin path cost

A resin path is priced on the same rates as a patio: £70 to £100 per m² over a sound base and £100 to £140 per m² with a dig-out. The difference is edging. A path has two long edges for a small area, so paths land at the top of each range. A 10 metre garden path 1.2 metres wide is 12m², which comes to £840 to £1,200 as an overlay or £1,200 to £1,680 with a new base.

Have the path laid in the same visit as the patio or the drive and the fixed costs are shared across both jobs, which pulls the rate per m² down. Step surrounds and pool areas follow the same logic, with each step edge detailed and priced on its own line of the quote so nothing appears on the final bill that you did not see first.

Can resin go over an existing patio?

Resin bound needs a base that does not move. Sound, well-drained concrete or tarmac makes a good base for an overlay at £70 to £100 per m², and it saves you the cost of digging out. Old slab patios are a different story. The joints between slabs, and any slab that rocks, crack straight through a 15mm resin layer, so the slabs come up and a properly compacted sub-base goes in. Cracked or sunken concrete gets the same treatment.

An overlay on concrete also needs somewhere for the water to go, because concrete does not drain. A full dig-out with a permeable sub-base gives you a SuDS-compliant patio that drains itself. Arkenstone checks the base on the free survey and tells you straight which option your garden needs, with the reason written on the quote.

How long a resin patio lasts and what upkeep costs

A resin bound patio on a sound base lasts 15 to 25 years, according to MyJobQuote, and Checkatrade quotes 15 to 20 years for driveways that take far heavier wear. The resin decides how it ages. Non-UV resin costs less, £4.20 to £5.20 per kg against £5.30 to £5.90 for UV-stable resin, but it yellows in sunlight, and a south-facing patio shows that within a couple of summers. Arkenstone lays UV-stable resin only, in dozens of natural aggregate colour blends.

Upkeep is cheap. Sweep off leaves, rinse with a low-pressure fan nozzle and cool water, and treat moss once or twice a year for £10 to £15. A professional jet wash costs £80 to £200 if you would rather hand it over. With no joints, there is no pointing to redo and no weeds pushing up between slabs.

Is a resin patio worth the money?

Resin costs about the same per m² as budget concrete slabs and less than porcelain or natural stone, so the choice comes down to what you want from the space. Resin has no joints for weeds, drains through its surface, follows curves without a single cut, and goes over a sound concrete base without a dig-out. Porcelain and natural stone give you a crisp slab look and a wide choice of formats, and they suit a formal garden.

Arkenstone lays both, plus slab and decorative concrete patios with steps, drainage and edging, so you are not relying on one firm's opinion of the surface it does not sell. Ask for resin and porcelain priced on the same survey and choose with the numbers in front of you. Our resin vs block paving guide runs the same comparison for driveways.

What changes the price

  • Base condition: sound concrete can be overlaid, cracked concrete and old slabs come up
  • Patio size: fixed costs push the rate per m² up on small areas
  • Edging: steel, block and granite edges are priced differently, and curves add labour
  • Steps and level changes: every step edge is detailed and priced separately
  • Access: soil and stone moved through the house or a narrow side passage takes longer
  • Aggregate blend: some natural stone blends cost more than others
  • Drainage: an overlay on concrete needs somewhere for the water to go

Resin patio cost, your questions answered

How much does a 20m² resin patio cost?

A 20m² resin bound patio costs £1,400 to £2,000 laid over a sound concrete or tarmac base, or £2,000 to £2,800 with a full dig-out and new sub-base. Edging, steps and access move the figure within those ranges. Arkenstone surveys free and gives you a fixed written quote within 48 hours.

How much does a resin path cost?

A resin path costs £70 to £100 per m² over a sound base and £100 to £140 per m² with a dig-out, the same rates as a patio. Paths sit at the top of each range because they carry more edging per square metre. A 10 metre path 1.2 metres wide comes to £840 to £1,680 depending on the base.

Is a resin patio cheaper than porcelain?

Yes, in most gardens. Resin bound costs £70 to £140 per m² laid, against £120 to £160 per m² for porcelain slabs in 2026 guide prices. Over a sound concrete base, resin goes straight on top without a dig-out, which widens the gap. Arkenstone lays both, so you can have them priced side by side on one survey.

Can resin be laid over old paving slabs?

Not as a lasting job. The joints between slabs and any slab that rocks crack through the resin layer, so old slabs come up and a properly compacted sub-base goes in first. Sound, well-drained concrete or tarmac is a different matter and takes an overlay well, which saves the cost of digging out.

Do I need planning permission for a resin patio?

A back garden patio needs no planning permission for the surface. In a front garden in England, permeable resin bound on a permeable base is fine at any size. A non-permeable surface over five square metres in a front garden needs permission unless the water runs off to a lawn or border.

How long does a resin patio last?

A resin bound patio on a sound base lasts 15 to 25 years. UV-stable resin keeps its colour, while cheap non-UV resin yellows in sunlight. Most patios are laid in one to two days and take foot traffic after around 24 hours. Arkenstone patios carry a 5-year written workmanship guarantee.
