We carry out roofing and driveway work across Cambridge and the villages around it, from period properties in the centre to growing developments on the fringe.

Cambridge's Victorian terraces typically carry natural slate that deserves like-for-like replacement, and many streets sit in conservation areas, we quote with that in mind from day one.

Based in Peterborough, we cover a 50-mile radius across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. Wherever you are in Cambridge, you get the same deal: a free survey, a fixed written quote from owner Charles Stevens, no upselling, and a written guarantee on the finished work, 20 years on roofing, 5 years on driveways and patios.

New roofs in Cambridge

When a roof has been patched one time too many, a full replacement is the job that ends the call-outs. We strip the old covering, lay a breathable membrane and treated battens, and fix the new slates or tiles with dry ridge and dry verge systems, so there is no mortar along the ridge to crack and wash out. Every new roof we fit in Cambridge is signed off by an independent building inspector and guaranteed in writing for 20 years. The survey is free and comes with photographs of your roof, the fixed quote follows within 48 hours and remains good for a month, and Charles calls you back the same day you enquire. For guide figures before we visit, read our new roof cost guide.

Victorian slate roofs, replaced like for like

Much of Victorian Cambridge was roofed in natural slate, and when a slate roof wears out, the right replacement is slate. A heavy concrete tile changes the look of a terrace and puts extra load on timbers that were sized for slate. On a terrace, the difficult part is where your roof meets next door's. In Huntingdon in September 2026 our team re-roofed a mid-terrace house in an alternative slate system with cross-battening, which gives every slate a correct fixing and a ventilated gap behind it, and formed a lead detail on site where the two roof heights differed. If your street sits in a conservation area, check with Cambridge City Council before you change the roof material; matching slate keeps that conversation short.

Roof repairs and flat roofs on Cambridge extensions

Plenty of Cambridge roofs need a repair, not a replacement, and that is what we quote for. Slipped or cracked slates, loose ridge tiles, failed lead flashing around chimneys and blocked valleys are all fixed as roof repairs, with no push towards a new roof you do not need. Kitchen extensions, dormers and garages sit under flat roofs, and when one of those fails the water comes into the room you use most. We replace failed flat roofs over extensions and garages, set the falls so rain runs off to the outlet, and seal the upstand where the flat roof meets the house wall, the two details that decide how long it stays dry. A repair gets the same free survey, fixed written quote and own crews as a full re-roof.

Recent work near Cambridge

Two recent jobs from elsewhere in Cambridgeshire show the standard you get. The Huntingdon slate re-roof was a mid-terrace home where the roof turns a corner and meets the neighbouring houses on both sides. In St Neots in May 2025 we built the timber frames and roofs for seven new-build homes, laying more than 500 square metres of Marley clay peg tiles with dry-fixed ridges and traditional cement work on the valleys and gable ends, and fitting the roof windows. Both jobs were carried out by the same Peterborough and Cambridgeshire team that covers Cambridge, and the same crews work across the towns and villages to the north and west of the city.

Tidy sites, every night

Customers notice that we leave the site clean at the end of every working day. Pride in the small things is how the big things get done right.

What customers say

“Very helpful and friendly, nothing too much trouble. Good communication and takes real pride in the work. Can't recommend highly enough and will definitely be contacting for any future roofing work I need doing.”

David Wagg · Roofing · via Trustatrader

“The job was carried out very professionally, a ground crew to remove the old decking and lay the Type 1, followed by a really experienced slab layer who took great pride in his work. Charles was fanatical about the team leaving the site clean each night and this inspired confidence. The final job has transformed our garden.”

Roofing in Cambridge, your questions answered

Are you insured to work in Cambridge?

Yes. Arkenstone Construction Ltd carries full public liability insurance on every Cambridge job, holds a 4.9/5 Trustatrader rating from 75 reviews and 9.6/10 on Checkatrade, and is one of the under-1% of roofing firms whose roof replacements are independently verified by a building inspector.

Do you cover Cambridge?

Yes. Based in Peterborough, we cover a 50-mile radius across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. Cambridge sits comfortably within that area, and travel is already built into our fixed quotes, there is no call-out premium.

How much does a new roof cost in Cambridge?

It depends on the size, pitch and material of your roof, Cambridge's housing stock varies a lot, so guessing without a survey would be dishonest. The survey is free, and the written quote that follows is fixed, with scaffolding and waste removal included.

Do I need consent to replace a slate roof in a Cambridge conservation area?

Replacing slate with matching slate leaves the roof looking as it did, which is the straightforward route. A change of material, new roof windows on a front slope or work on a listed building can need consent, so check with Cambridge City Council before you book. We write the current and proposed materials on your quote, which gives you the details the council will ask about.

Can you re-roof a Cambridge terrace without touching next door's roof?

Yes. We replace your roof and tie it into the neighbouring roofs at the party wall, leaving theirs as it is. Where the heights line up, a bonding gutter does the job; where they differ, as on our Huntingdon mid-terrace job, we form a lead detail to weather the junction. You see exactly how it will be done at the survey.

How long does a new roof in Cambridge take?

Less time than most homeowners expect. With teams of more than 20 roofers, we finish a re-roof well inside the one to two weeks many firms spend on site, and on one Peterborough home we replaced the roof and fitted solar panels in a single day. Your fixed quote states the timescale, and you hear from us daily while the crew is on site.
