Parson Drove is a long, scattered village west of Wisbech, with its historic lock-up on the green as the landmark and houses spread out along the droves rather than packed round a centre. Much of the older stock is brick farmhouses and cottages with hipped clay pantile roofs and large chimneys, sitting on open ground with the wind coming straight off the Fen. Those big hipped roofs have a lot of ridge and hip line to keep watertight, and the mortar bedding on them is usually the first thing to go.

Pantiles on these older houses can be kept going for a long time if they are looked after. We re-fix slipped tiles, replace cracked ones with a match, re-bed or mechanically fix hips and ridges so they cannot lift, and renew the lead at the chimneys, all as fixed-price roof repairs. When the battens have gone soft or the underlay has perished across the roof, the honest advice is a full re-roof: strip the covering, renew the felt and battens, re-lay sound tiles or replace them, and have an independent building inspector check and sign off the finished job.

The later bungalows and infill homes along the village are mostly concrete interlocking tile on a shallow pitch, which relies heavily on the underlay in driving rain. A leak that only appears when the wind is from one direction is the classic sign that the felt has failed, and we will show you photographs from the loft and the roof so you can see the problem for yourself before deciding what to do about it.
